The caves of Lebanon  >  AFQA CAVE

Location: Afqa village, North Keserouane
Geology: Hammana and Sannine Formation
Development: 5260m

This cave has been known since antiquity. It is where the fables Adonis, lover of Aphrodite, died. The cave has a massive entrance and a very large spring issues from its entrance forming a large waterfall in winter. Many cavers had attempted to survey the cave but it was not until 2005 that a complete survey was drawn by the SCL. The cave consists of a series of labyrinths and large rooms. An underground river runs through one of the passages ending in a terminal inaccessible siphon. In winter the entire cave is flooded and cannot be entered.
