The caves of Lebanon > AL-KASSARAT CAVE Location: Antelias Quarries, Antelias Geology: Keserouane Formation Development: 4648m Special issues: Permission from the Water Authority of Beirut is needed to enter. Quarry work opened a hole in the cave wall that led to the discovery of this cave in the Antelias region near Beirut. The cave was found to be over 4000m in development. Quarrying work continued during the Lebanese civil war destroying about 500m of the cave and its natural entrance. In 1996 rediscovery of the cave was undertaken by the SCL and BTD by drilling wells to locate the cave. Today the cave has only one entrance, through a stairway built by the Beirut Water Authority since the damming of the underground river that runs through most of the cave. |
